Bullo River Station, Timber Creek

The iconic outback property, Bullo River Station, located 800 kilometres southwest of Darwin near the Western Australian border, is the 500,000 acre home of Marlee Ranacher, daughter of pioneering parents Charles and Sara Henderson, who established the property in the 1950s. Marlee and her husband Franz have continued a family tradition of welcoming discerning guests from around the world, offering a comfortable and fully-hosted farm stay for those seeking the quintessential outback experience.

Fully hosted means daily interaction with the family and the colourful collection of workers that double as guest guides. Access to the property is by four wheel drive or air charter from Kununurra (Western Australia) or Darwin. Filling your days is never a chore at Bullo. The friendly and capable team will arrange all your activities tailor-made each day to suit your wishes, and can accompany you on river cruises up the spectacular Bullo River Gorge to fish or spot crocodiles, help you interpret local Aboriginal rock art, or introduce you to the hundreds of bird species that call Bullo home. You might like to try cattle mustering or horse riding, depending on your riding ability, and on the station’s mustering schedule.

The team can also arrange optional helicopter trips for aerial sightseeing. For those keen on fishing, there are great opportunities for river and coastal fishing, with unique chances to access untouched local areas by boat or helicopter. All activities on offer are included in the nightly rate, with an additional cost for helicopter trips. Most activities include a picnic lunch, allowing you to explore the far reaches of the property, or spend more time enjoying your chosen activity. Light meals are accompanied by a selection of soft drinks and billy tea.

A purpose built guest area, located a few metres from the main house, consists of twelve double or twin rooms, each with airconditioning and ensuite facilities. Guests are also welcome to enjoy the vast living areas of the homestead, or relax by the swimming pool. Breakfasts are usually served outside on the homestead verandah, with dinners in the main dining room. Dinners are informal, and the menu relies heavily on the two exceptional products of the property, fresh barramundi (hopefully one you have caught yourself), and organic prime beef.

Glasshouse Mountains

The Glasshouse Mountains in the hinterland of Queensland’s Sunshine Coast are actually the cores of 20 million year old volcanoes. The sides of the volcanoes have eroded away leaving only the hardened rock spiremountain cores we see today. Learn more about this awe-inspiring landscape.
