Saunders Gorge Sanctuary – Hideaway Cottage, Palmer

The Saunders Gorge Sanctuary is a private property of 1,364 hectares, where the owners Brenton and Nadene are dedicated to natural habitat preservation. Features include the Australian heritage listed Saunders Gorge, a large array of native fauna, wonderful diversity of native flora, spring-filled rock water holes, spectacular gorges and steep rugged hills. The property is on the rugged eastern slopes of the Mount Lofty Ranges overlooking the vast Murray plains and offers visitors the opportunity to experience the rugged Australian landscape and learn about and enjoy the natural environment. This magnificent area can be experienced and enjoyed through a scenic walk along the Saunders Gorge with its diverse bird life, you may spot a flock of Firetail finches collecting seeds or a Treecreeper busily hunting for insects and the whole time being serenaded with a chorus of bird sounds or for serious hikers try a day out on the 1,364 hectare of rugged hills and gorges. All this activity is bound to work up an appetite and what better place than the Saunders Gorge a la carte restaurant to relax and indulge, and why not make the experience complete with a night or two’s accommodation in one of the self contained cottages. The property is 18 kilometres east of Mount Pleasant on the Walker Flat Road, only a 90 minute drive from Adelaide and 20 minutes from the River Murray town of Mannum. Saunders Gorge Sanctuary has Eco Tourism accreditation.
