Cockle Train Trip – ST01

The Norfolk Pines that line the foreshore at Victor Harbor, the Cockle Train is one of South Australia’s best kept secrets. It travels along the south coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, across farmlands and coastal dunes. The cool blue waters of the Southern Ocean feature in a perfect scene of land, sea and sky, framed by the windows of the historic train.

. From May until September, Southern Right Whales may be seen from the train in Encounter Bay. After breeding in the warmer waters, cow whales bring their calves into the shallow protected bays along which the Cockle Train steams. Keep a lookout – a sighting is always an unexpected pleasure. How did the Cockle Train get its name? Since 1887 passenger trains operating along the coast from Goolwa to Victor Harbor have affectionately been known as the Cockle Train. The broad, sandy surf beaches at Goolwa are famous for large cockles. This abundant shellfish is collected from the shallow water at the edge of the surf by anglers and is one of the most common fishing baits used in South Australia.
