Desert Breakaway Afternoon Tour – RDB01

See Coober Pedy’s most interesting and unique sites in a fully air conditioned bus with an experienced local Opal Miner guide, who will explain the history of Coober Pedy and how opal was first discovered in the area. Tour starts with a visit to Potch Gully a suburb of Coober Pedy. Your guide will explain the methods used to build Dugouts. Then visit a magnificent underground church and on the way back to town stop at the local cemetery – Boot Hill, to pay your respects to some of Coober Pedys’ eccentric old timers. Then a general town tour showing you the hospital, water treatment plant, school, first post office, local noodling spots and the Desert Golf Course. A short drive from the golf course and you are on the opal fields. Your guide will explain the many facets of opal mining and show you some of the metal dinosaurs used in the mining process. You will be taken to a totally safe noodling environment where you can fossick for opal. Crocodile Harry’s is next where you will be able to wander through this unique underground home and opal mine. Then onto the Breakaways. These beautiful ranges overlook a mysterious landscape of ancient valleys and an old sea-bed that stretches as far as the eye can see. On the return to town follow a small part of the worlds longest fence, the Dingo fence. Your guide will explain the practical reasons for this fence’s existence. Return via the Oodnadatta track.
