Desert Cave Tours offer a variety of tours in and around Coober Pedy, the tours are only limited by your imagination. Tours include Coober Pedy town and scenic tours, opal discovery, fossicking for opals and mail run day tour.

Touring Options

Outback Colour Four Day Tour – DCT07

The Outback Colour three nights, four day tour combines the the Desert Cave half day tour, Mail Run day tour and time to try noodling (looking for opals) into one all inclusive tour. Highlights include visits to an underground home and church, pottery display, Umoona Opal Mine and Museum and travel through the opal fields to The Breakaways Range and Dingo Fence. Join the mail run and travel overland in a triangle between Coober Pedy, Oodnadatta and William Creek visiting points of interest and delivering mail to all cattle stations on the way. The tour covers 600 kilometres, see historic ruins and monuments and part of the Overland Telegraph Line.

Painted Desert Day Tour – DCT05

Travel in a four wheel drive vehicle through vast cattle stations, stop for bush walks in spectacular breakaway country including the Painted Desert and Arckaringa Hills, enjoy outback landscapes and waterholes, the Great Artesian Basin and learn about the history and pastoral industry of the area.

Outback Mail Run Day Tour – DCT01

Travel overland in a triangle between Coober Pedy, Oodnadatta and William Creek visiting points of interest and delivering mail to all cattle stations on the way. The tour covers 600 kilometres, highlights include historic ruins and monuments and part of the Overland Telegraph Line.

Coober Pedy Desert Cave Afternoon Tour – DCT04

Highlights include visit to an underground church, home and pottery display, Umoona Opal Mine and Museum, travel through the opal fields to The Breakaways Range and Dingo Fence.

Ghan Transfer – DCT10

Desert Cave Tours will transfer you to or from your accommodation at the Desert Cave Hotel to the Ghan Train Manguri railway siding 40 kilometres west of Coober Pedy.

Outback Matrix Four Day Tour – DCT11

The Outback Matrix three nights, four day tour combines the Desert Cave half day tour, Painted Desert day tour and Star Gazing evening tour into one tour. Highlights include visits to an underground home and church, pottery display, Umoona Opal Mine and Museum and travel through the opal fields to The Breakaways Range and Dingo Fence. Travel through vast cattle stations, stop for bush walks in spectacular breakaway country including the Painted Desert and Arckaringa Hills, enjoy outback landscapes and waterholes, the Great Artesian Basin and learn about the history and pastoral industry of the area. Greyhound Bus Transfer – DCT07

Desert Cave Tours will transfer you to or from your accommodation at the Desert Cave Hotel to Coober Pedy Greyhound Bus Depot.

Down ‘N’ Dirty Opal Digging Four Hour Tour – DCT13

A safe, fun, informative way to mine your own opal. You will have access to a working mine where you will be supplied with a hard hat, torch and handpick to get Down ‘N’ Dirty and try to find your fortune.

Opal Buyer On the Ghan Two Day Tour – DCT002

Opal Buyer On the Ghan one night, two-day tour includes the Desert Cave half-day tour and noodling (fossicking for opals). Highlights include visits to an underground home and church, pottery display, Umoona Opal Mine and Museum and travel through the opal fields to The Breakaways Range and Dingo Fence. Learn about the art of noodling and try looking for your own opals.

. Day One – Arrive on one of the world famous trains in Cooper Pedy, ‘The Ghan’. After your transfer from Manguri, 40 kilometres west of Coober Pedy, it will be check-in. After a relaxing lunch you will be taken on a four hour journey of Coober Pey, and visit the icons of this world famous opal mining town, including the Breakaways and Moon Plain, where ‘Mad Max’ was filmed.

. Day Two – After checkout the next morning, you still have time to try your luck noodling (fossicking) at Jeweller’s Road, to find the elusive Fire in a Stone, Opal. Transfer to the airport for your flight to Adelaide.
