Created by volcanic eruptions over 30 million years ago, Cape Hillsborough was named by Captain Cook in 1770 and forms parts of the traditional home of the Aboriginal Juipera people. As part of these friendly and informative tours you will encounter a range of plants and animals and become familiar with their use in local aboriginal culture.

Join them on one of their memorable half-day tours. With two tours running daily they fit into any itinerary. Choose either the morning Tropical Diversity Tour or the afternoon Tropical Seascape Tour.

Each tour departs from the Mackay City Visitors Information Centre. While traveling to Cape Hillsborough on the air-conditioned tour bus they will present a video slide production taking you back to the very formation of Australia. You will witness the creatures, people and events, which changed the face of this remarkable area.

Touring Options

Tropical Diversity Tour

Discover the beauty and wonders of this pristine natural environment with an interpretive walk through a range of habitats from the Mangrove Diversity Boardwalk to the Juipera Plant Trail and experience the fertile rainforest within the secluded Hidden Valley. During this tour you will visit Aboriginal sights such as a fish trap and shell midden, exploring how the Juipera people made use of the areas plants and animals, prospering through their connection to the environment.

Tropical Seascape Tour

Join this adventurous trek through Open Eucalyptus Woodland and Subtropical Rainforest whilst overlooking the world heritage listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Enjoy panoramic views of the beautiful Whitsunday Islands from rugged cliffs lined with majestic Hoop Pines. This interpretive walk will explore the plants and animals of the area and the role they played in the lives of the Juipera people. This tour is designed for people familiar with bush walking, as the Andrews Point trail is steep and uneven in some areas.
