Highlights of South Australia 8 Day Tour – FT001

This eight day/seven night tour of South Australia including Kangaroo Island, the Clare Valley and the Flinders Ranges is designed for senior groups, probus clubs from interstate or South Australia.

. Day One – On arrival from Melbourne via aircraft or train your group will be collected from their port by Flagstaff Coaches and transferred to Cape Jervis to catch the 1800 ferry service to Kangaroo Island. Lunch (own cost). Latest departure time from Adelaide is 1500 South Australian time. Any touring is dependant on flight or train arrival time in Adelaide, maybe a tour into Victor Harbor if time permits. Arriving in Penneshaw at 1900 we board our coach and travel to Kingscote, where we book into our accommodation at the Island Resort Motel, dinner will be in the motel dining room.

. Day Two – Departing Kingscote we travel via Little Sahara Geological Monument, then to Vivonne Bay and Point Ellen for a morning tea stop. We take time to view the white sands of the bay, home to the island’s cray fishing fleet. Travelling on to the Flinders Chase National Park to view the koalas and the kangaroos, we take time out to enjoy a barbecue or picnic lunch. While we are in Flinders Chase we visit Bunker Hill Lookout, Remarkable Rocks, Weirs Cove, Admirals Arch, Cape Du Coudic and the New Zealand Fur Seal colony. Returning to Kingscote via the Playford Highway, dinner tonight will be in the motel restaurant. You may enjoy a walk to the wharf area after dinner or a penguin tour. Overnight accommodation at the Island Resort Motel.

. Day Three – This morning we pack and load the coach for our departure back to the mainland. After breakfast and saying farewell to our hosts, we return to Penneshaw and depart Kangaroo Island on the Sealink Ferry at 1030, arriving at Cape Jervis at 1130. Travelling through to McLaren Vale we stop at the German village of Hahndorf for lunch (own cost). From Hahndorf we wind our way through the pristine hills of the Onkaparinga Valley passing the townships of Oakbank, Woodside and Birdwood to the Barossa Valley. We will have a short stop for an afternoon break at Chateau Dorrien to view the bric-a-brac and crafts on show. We continue on through Tanunda to the Clare Valley booking into our motel in this delightful town. Overnight accommodation at the Clare Central Motel.

. Day Four – Today after a deliciously cooked breakfast we begin the exploration of the Clare Valley, heralded as one of Australia’s finest wine producing areas. We commence the day with a short tour of the town of Clare with a visit to Goat Hill Lookout. Travelling south from Clare we will visit the charming village of Sevenhill and the historic Sevenhill Monastery, home to the Jesuit priests and the Sevenhill Cellars Winery, which produces sacramental wine. We will have time to inspect the church and beautiful vineyards before departing for the township of Mintaro, where we enjoy a two course lunch at the Magpie and Stump Hotel. You will have time to stroll the footpaths of this old slate mining town. After lunch we shall visit Martindale Hall, made famous by the movie ‘Picnic at Hanging Rock’. We return to the Clare Central Motel for dinner in the dining room. Overnight accommodation at the Clare Central Motel.

. Day Five – Departing Clare we continue north along the old bullock dray route of the mid 1800’s travelling via Melrose and Wilmington to Quorn for our lunch stop (own cost). Departing Quorn we approach the sweeping landscape of the Willochra Plains, where station owner Hugh Proby, the biggest landholder in the area, lost his life by drowning in the Willochra River while droving sheep. We stop at Kanyaka Ruins, the homestead area which belonged to Hugh Proby for a stroll around this interesting place. We proceed to Hawker after passing the culturally significant Yourambulla Ranges, art site to the Adnyamathanha Aboriginal People. Our overnight accommodation will be at the Wilpena Chalet Motel where we will enjoy dinner in the dining room. Perhaps for those who wish an evening walk, a short stroll along the creek may be in order.

. Day Six – Today we will enjoy a complete day of touring the magnificent Flinders Ranges including Wilpena Pound, Brachina Gorge (road conditions permitting), Blinman Cemetery and Blinman Copper Mine. Lunch today will be included at the Blinman Pub (two courses). You may wish to sit outside and enjoy a cold beer or two before we before we wind our way through the spectacular Parachilna Gorge, passing the old Tuberculosis Hostel of Angorichina. On the way through the gorge keep your eyes open for kangaroos and tranquil waterholes lined by majestic river red gums. Once through Parachilna Gorge we will travel along the Leigh Creek Road heading south to awe at the splendour of the sun on the western face of the ranges. We return to the Wilpena Pound Chalet for dinner. Overnight accommodation Flinders Ranges.

. Day Seven – Departing the Flinders Ranges we return to Quorn, home of the Pichi Richi Railway Preservation Society. Our coach will set you down at the steam train (subject to operation) where you enjoy the 90 minute trip through the Pichi Richi Pass to Port Augusta where our coach will meet you. We have time for lunch (own cost) at the Arid Lands Botanical Gardens before travelling via Port Pirie and Port Broughton to Moonta on the Yorke Peninsula. Overnight accommodation at Moonta.

. Day Eight – This morning after breakfast we start the day with a tour of the historic Cornish mining town of Moonta. We visit the Moonta Museum Community Church and old mine area before returning to Adelaide by lunch time, where we travel to the beautiful seaside suburb of Glenelg for lunch (own cost). Your coach captain will transfer you to the Adelaide Airport or Keswick Railway Station for your return journey to Melbourne or to your motel in Adelaide if you are staying on.

Fly/Fly Kangaroo Island Wildlife Tour – SCT001

Join Southern Cross Tours on a premium quality day tour to Kangaroo Island departing from Adelaide daily with return air transfers to/from Kangaroo Island. We pick you up from your Adelaide Hotel before departing for our flight to Kangaroo Island. Your tour commences with a 30 minute flight to Kangaroo Island. We begin the tour on the island with a visit to Vivonne Bay, then view koalas at Hanson Bay. Kangaroos and Tamar Wallabies are plentiful and also viewed where found. In the Flinders Chase National Park we visit Rocky River, the Visitor Centre, Remarkable Rocks, Cape Du Coudic, Admirals Arch, New Zealand Fur Seal colony and view more kangaroos and Cape Barren Geese. A barbecue lunch is included before we visit the Seal Bay Conservation Park and the opportunity to walk amongst the sea lions. Our return flight will take us back to Adelaide by 1700.
