Walking Tours in Australia
With the country’s many national parks, coastal trails and sublime scenery, walking tours in Australia are hugely popular with people looking to see the sights at their own pace. Given the expansive terrain, the heat and the lack of civilisation in many parts of the country, it usually makes sense to go hiking in a group. Such activities can easily be arranged in advance at any major town or city across the country.
Walking tours in Australia can take a number of forms, depending on budget and the amount of time available. Luxury walking tours can be tailor-made and include a personal guide for any number of people. On organised group tours, there is usually a set route with a certain number of other people on the same itinerary. These make for an excellent way to meet people while taking in the scenery.
The Great Ocean Walk in Victoria covers more than 60 miles between Apollo Bay and the stunning 12 Apostles, a series of dramatic limestone stacks that skirt the shoreline in Port Campbell National Park. The Blue Mountains are another hugely popular destination for walking tours in Australia because of their proximity to Sydney. They lie just 30 miles outside of the city centre and, although not very tall, feature sublime gorges and rock formations that make for perfect hiking terrain.
The interior of Tasmania features a host of superb walking trails, the most famous of which is the Overland Track which runs from Lake St Clair to Cradle Mountain. This is a popular route in the summer between November and April, so book early if visiting at this time.
