Iga Warta offers a unique opportunity for visitors to experience Adnyamathanha, Aboriginal culture, living, sharing and learning in an Aboriginal community setting. Iga Warta means place of the native orange tree in Yura Ngawarla, the language of the Adnyamathanha people, the traditional owners of the area. Iga Warta is set amongst the magnificent mountains in the Northern Flinders Ranges and is owned, managed and staffed totally by Aboriginal people.

Touring Options

Artefact Making 2-3 Hour Tour – IW07

Visitors have the opportunity to try their hand in the ancient art of artefact making. They can make a boomerang or clapping sticks, which they can then take home with them. Visitors find this a very therapeutic pass time and many spend hours making their special souvenirs.

Adnyamathanha Social History 3 Hour Tour – IW06

Visit sites and listen to what has happened to our people since non-Aboriginal people came to our country and learn about issues including the Missions, pastoralists, rations and the changes to our people’s lifestyles.

Cultural Cookout Evening 3 Hour Tour – IW09

Evening meal with cultural activities such as music, story telling about Adnyamathanha Yura Muda. Includes explaining traditional cooking methods, preparation of meat, damper and accompanying fruit and vegetables

Malki Painting Site 2 Hour Tour – IW01

Visit a painting site that has been dated to be 35,000 years old and can still be interpreted through the oral history of our people that has been handed down generation to generation. Immerse oneself as one with one of the oldest cultures in the world – learn the interpretation of rock art through Adnyamathanha eyes.

Art Painting 2 Hour Tour – IW08

We have a resident Aboriginal artist from Coober Pedy and she offers sessions in her people’s traditional art forms. Again visitors are given the opportunity to make their own special souvenir as part of these sessions. This enables the visitor to learn about the differences between Aboriginal groups and their cultures and art.

Gammon Ranges Overnight Camping Tour – IW11

Overnight camping tour to the Gammon Ranges, Mount Chambers, Lake Frome and Bunyip Chasm. Camp out in the bush with Adnyamathanha people to learn about the culture and the stars and to see both the sunset and sunrise over Lake Frome or the Gammon Ranges. These camps can be offered as women’s camps, men’s camps or mixed and the cultural content is then offered in a gender specific way.

Native Plant Walking 90 Minute Tour – IW03

This tour teaches the visitor about traditional plant use in terms of food and medicine and they have the opportunity to taste foods in season. Over 30 plants are interpreted in this tour.

Climbing Iga Warta Hill 4 Hour Tour – IW10

Climb Iga Warta Hill on this guided walk which includes interpretation of plants as you climb up through the Gorge. Tours can be arranged to see the Sunrise over Lake Frome. Enjoy the panoramic view of Lake Frome in the distance as well as Mount McKinlay and the Gammon Ranges. Adnyamathanha guides interpret the lay out of this ancient and enchanting land.

Yura Muda Sites 2 Hour Tour – IW02

Visit a women’s site with one of the Adnyamathanha women and learn about traditional as well as contemporary issues from a women’s perspective including the moiety system.

Red Gorge 5 Hour Tour – IW05

Red Gorge is the ‘gallery’ of engravings dated at some 90,000 plus years old that is a very special and spiritual place to the Adnyamathanha people. Visitors will enjoy the peaceful and serene surroundings, whilst on the quite walk and on their return through the Gorge as the Adnyamathanha Guide shares the interpretation. Lunch is served in a tranquil river (creek) bed.
