Experiences in South Australia
Separating the vast expanses of Western Australia from the rest of the country, South Australia is a great place to stopover when touring. The state capital Adelaide, with its green environs and cosmopolitan city centre, is the main hub. Take an old tram to the suburb of Glenelg to experience South Australia’s best beach, a seaside strip featuring excellent shopping along its idyllic promenade and pier.
Visitors keen to get up close and personal with Australian wildlife are advised to make a beeline for Cleland Conservation Park, a huge expanse on the edge of the city featuring koalas, wombats, kangaroos and emus. Visitors can also take the Aboriginal cultural tour here and experience South Australia’s indigenous heritage.
A little farther out of the city centre, the Adelaide Hills are a prime recreation spot, boasting gently rolling peaks and valleys intersected with winding country roads and fine wineries. In total, there are about 30 winemakers in this region, but visitors can also tour the cheese and chocolate makers for a day of supreme indulgence.
If there is time between tastings, take a trip to Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens, the state’s highest peak, home to thousands of species of plant. Popular Kangaroo Island offers yet another unforgettable South Australian experience, with its untouched sandy beaches, wineries, sand boarding and superb diving. Just 45 minutes by ferry off the coast of the Fleurieu Peninsula, this laid-back paradise moves at a slower pace than the mainland.
